Then you will go to the nine-day Jamboree, where you will live, work and play with 43,000 brother Scouts from all 50 states and many foreign countries. You will come away from the event with a clear understanding of and a deeper commitment to the ideals of Scouting. Be a part of this historic Scouting event!
Where is the Jamboree?
Fort A.P. Hill, near Fredericksburg, Virginia.
When is the Jamboree?
The Jamboree is July 26 to August 4, 2010. You will leave July 18, 2010 for a tour of nation's Capitol and nearby historic sites. You will return to Los Angeles on August 5, 2010.
Who can attend the Jamboree?
Boy Scouts must be at least First Class Scouts. They must have completed the sixth grade or be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010, but not have reached their 18th birthday by August 4, 2010.
What can I do at the Jamboree?
The Western Region will have its own Activity Center with 10 challenging activities (confidence course, motocross, action alley, pioneering, rappelling, air rifle, archery, bikeathlon, buckskin games and trapshooting). Remote aquatic centers will feature canoeing, scuba, fishing, kayaks, racing shells, rafts and snorkeling. Special programs and exhibits will include Merit Badge Midway, conservation events, Arts & Science Fair and a 5K run. The Jamboree also features two outstanding Arena Shows with name entertainers.
What does the tour include?
Sightseeing tentatively includes: New York City, Philadelphia, Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Baltimore, the Naval Academy, Washington, D.C., Mt. Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown and Busch Gardens (try the Roman Rapids, Loch Ness Monster and Big Bad Wolf!). While in our nation's Capitol, we will visit our Congressman, Washington Monument, Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam memorials, Smithsonian museums, FBI (you'll love the tommy gun firing demonstration), Capitol tour, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and more!
What does this great trip cost?
The current estimate is in the range of $3,500 to $4,000 per scout. The fee includes all transportation, tours, troop and patrol equipment, lodging, most meals and insurance. Uniforms, personal equipment and spending money are extra.
Can I earn part of the cost?
Yes. You will have the opportunities to earn some or all of the cost of the trip. Fund-raisers include sales projects and a successful Scouts-For-Hire program.
How are Jamboree troops organized?
Verdugo Hills Council is allocated one troop -- 36 Scouts plus 4 adult leaders. A troop has four patrols (8 Scouts), 4 youth leaders and 4 adult leaders. Part of the contingent will include two foreign Scouts who will be joining each of our troops at the Jamboree.
How do I apply?
All scouts for the Verdugo Hills Contingent have been chosen. Space was limited to 36 Scouts. We had many great applicants, but are limited in our ability to take all the deserving scouts.
If I apply, does that mean I get to go to the Jamboree?
Each scout was interviewed and given the chance to be a part of the Jamboree contingent. No one was guaranteed entry.
What if I change my mind or have to cancel?
The $125 application fee is refundable if you are not chosen. If you are chosen, then have to cancel, your fee will be refunded if a replacement Scout is found. Payments for transportation, lodging or the tour will be refunded under the provisions of the contract.
If I am selected, what will be expected of me?
You must participate in the pre-Jamboree weekend training sessions in 2009-10, and you should plan to work at the fund-raising events. Attendance is required at periodic troop/parent meetings which will begin in September 2009. Your parents are also expected to help the organization and operation of the Jamboree troop.
